Dear Colon Community Friends,
We hope that whether you are a student, community member or the parent/family member of a Colon student, you are seeing the magic that is happening here at Colon Community Schools.
In mid-August, you may have noticed crews of hard working volunteers weeding, planting, painting, scrubbing, trimming, digging and mulching as part of our Second Annual Magi Pride Days. It was incredible to see all sorts of folks, from little ones to grandparents, working side by side to spruce up our grounds for opening day…and the results were amazing! Our Third Annual Magi Pride Days will be held on August 17th-19th. We look forward to seeing the tremendous outpouring of community support again this year!
Our teachers have been very busy this year working on curriculum updates. We have adopted new reading curriculum as well as a new math series at the elementary level, and continue to update our curriculum at the secondary level. Colon teachers are committed to providing the best instruction of relevant information to ensure that our students are college and career ready when they leave our walls. This includes constant focus on student progress as well as reflection on instructional strategies to ensure optimal growth for each child. It is important that our students grow in their ability to effectively use information, hypothesize, problem solve, reason and collaborate. The changes in curriculum and instruction will provide rich learning opportunities designed to help students develop these skills. Change can be a daunting task, but we are committed to providing the best educational opportunities possible for our students.
Some other changes that you may have noticed in our district include the removal of the old brick building that was previously located across from Colon Elementary School. This allows for additional parking and potentially some different driveway configurations for student drop-offs in the future. Some recent donations provided for new batting cages on the ball fields and a golf simulator on the athletic complex.
It has been a great year for the Colon music program, with our bands providing entertainment at games, concerts, parades and Christmas in Colon. And our elementary students showcased their talents with several performances. Additionally, the Southwest Michigan College Jazz Band provided the community with a great show as a fundraiser for our music department! And this year’s drama production was a hit as they presented “The Bold, The Young and the Murdered”. And many pieces of the incredible art work of our students are on display in our showcases at the high school. It’s wonderful to see our fine arts program growing!
This year, was the second year for our High School Robotics Program. The team had a successful year of competition and are looking forward to expanding to the middle school next year.
There are many great things happening at Colon Community Schools. We are proud to serve the Colon Community and are thrilled with the incredible support of this community. Together we can do so much more!
